Although I agree with all the arguments you put forth in favor of our moon, I still think that mars is a worthy goal. For one, if the technologies are developed considering the hostile environments of mars, they can certainly be used with great ease on a relatively less hostile moon. In a way, I think that if we shoot to colonize mars, we may miss and end up colonizing the moon :)
