Oh I did not know that, though a group of people in a bar that we went to had a pretty heated discussion about taxes, though I did not really focus on the details.

I think progressive taxes make much more sense as well, as long as the tax brackets are intelligently defined. But like you said, it depends on the range in people's finances. If most people in country make 30K, a 20% tax rate is stupid, if at the end of it people have to struggle for food.
