I am shocked and saddened that that the first time I am hearing about it is throught this post! Thanks for voicing it here!
With all the media attention and public sympathies going directed towards the Titan submersible (which was also tragic, I do not mean to diminish the incident in any way), I remember the quote “a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic”.
I think this bias is built into our psyche, because we are bad at grasping large numbers. We need to be aware of this effect and create bias-proof strict regulations to prevent such negligences, regardless of how much public attention is going to which tragedy - because every single life matters.
