One of the most versatile poets in Indian history was born to a poverty-stricken family in British India. His impressionable adolescent years were spent in the midst of India’s fiery struggle for independence.

Naturally, his ideology was inspired by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Karl Marx.

So was his poetry.

Renowned by his pen name Dinkar, Ramdhari Singh was a Hindi language poet, author, freedom fighter, and an academic.

Though hailed as a Rashtra-Kavi (National Poet), he is also popularly considered a Jana-Kavi (People’s Poet).

His words evoked emotions in people’s hearts.

Love, passion, inequality, politics, and the socioeconomic conditions of the era were the main themes in his poems.

The fires of India’s struggle for independence forged his poetic persona. He drew elements from the great Indian epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana and combined them with the reality of his time.

His poems were about rising from the ashes.

They inspired people.

They still continue to do.
